The Human-Readable Version
We don't want to do anything creepy with your data. WikiCatch is a community-driven platform for anglers to discover and share fishing spots. We respect your privacy and handle your data responsibly.
A) Without an Account
- You can browse fishing spots, view catch logs, and explore the map without creating an account.
- Without an account, we don't collect any personal information about you.
- We may collect anonymous usage analytics to understand how people use the app.
B) With a WikiCatch Account
What account information do we store?
- When you sign up, we store your email address, display name, and profile photo (if you choose to add one).
- Authentication is handled by Firebase Authentication (Google). If you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive only the information you authorize.
- Data transmitted via the app to and from our servers is encrypted following industry best practices.
What do we store about your catch logs?
- Your catch logs are stored on our servers to provide the service.
- Catch log data includes: fishing spot, date, rating, notes, fish caught (species, quantity, weight, length), and any photos you attach.
- You control the visibility of each catch log — public or private.
- Private catch logs are only visible to you. Public catch logs may be seen by other WikiCatch users on the fishing spot page.
What other data do we store?
- Your favorite fishing spots (spots you've saved).
What do we do with your data?
We act responsibly with it. Beyond what is needed to run WikiCatch, we will not share your data with third parties. We will never sell your data.
How is your data shared with third parties so we can run WikiCatch?
- Your data is stored on Google Cloud / Firebase servers.
- Search functionality is provided by Algolia. Fishing spot and species data is indexed for search — no personal user data is sent to Algolia.
- Payment processing (if applicable) is handled by Apple (App Store). We don't store your payment details.
C) Anonymous Usage Data
- We may use analytics to track anonymous usage patterns (e.g., "someone viewed a fishing spot in Hungary"). This helps us understand which features people use and improve the app.
- Our map provider (Apple Maps) may collect anonymous data to improve mapping services.
- We use crash reporting to track and fix crashes. These reports include non-identifiable information such as device type and crash location.
D) Location Data
- WikiCatch uses your device's location to show you nearby fishing spots on the map.
- Location access is optional — you can use WikiCatch without granting location permissions.
- We do not continuously track your location in the background.
E) Photos
- Photos you upload to catch logs are stored on our servers (Firebase Storage).
- We do not access your photo library without your explicit permission.
- Photos in public catch logs may be visible to other users.
