McCloud river redband trout
Oncorhynchus mykiss stonei
Overview
The McCloud River redband trout, sometimes referred to as the Sacramento redband trout, is a redband trout subspecies of rainbow trout in the family Salmonidae. O. m. stonei is found in the McCloud River and Pit River, with ancestral lineages found in specific tributaries in the Upper McCloud river. There is also evidence that a primitive form of McCloud River redband trout isolated in Sheepheaven Creek may constitute a separate subspecies listing, Oncorhynchus mykiss calisulat. Its historic range has declined significantly since it was first described in 1894. Remaining populations of genetically pure McCloud River redband trout are threatened by predation, habitat loss, competition with introduced trout species and by hybridization with hatchery rainbow trout introduced to support sport fishing.
