About East Machias River

East Machias River, in Maine, United States, is a river where current dictates almost everything. Rocks, undercut banks, and fallen timber are the obvious targets, but the productive water at East Machias River is often the seam between two current speeds — that's where fish wait for food to drift past. Match the size of your bait or lure to whatever insects, baitfish, or crayfish you can see in the water.

Fishing Techniques

• For Largemouth bass

Vary your retrieve speed and lure presentation until you find what the bass are keying on, as their preferences can change daily based on weather and water conditions.

• For Smallmouth bass

Focus your fishing efforts around rocky structures, ledges, and areas with current, as smallmouth bass prefer these habitats.

• For Chain pickerel

Use a wire leader to prevent bite-offs due to pickerel's sharp teeth, and vary your retrieve speed until you find what they're hitting.
